I’ll return again to my theme of the “divided American soul,” but this time I’d like to make a larger point that supports both Canto and Reinel, I believe. The “culture wars” that have divided our culture since the Civil War are still happening today, and, to some extent, they have happened and are taking place in every nation. It’s very much like the “yin” and “yang” that pervades every soul, and the acquisition of power is one factor that can disrupt the balance between the two. When France became powerful, the “yang” of the Republic was overwhelmed by the “yin” of the Empire, in part because Napoleon’s own brilliant psyche was driven by his own insatiable (and unbalanced) need to achieve, to preserve his achievements, and to perfect his vision…The important thing to remember is that, in an open democracy, the two conflicting tendencies are always there, pushing and pulling against each other, wrestling for control, just as they are in each one of us, whatever our nationality. If one of us were to be become powerful, the stronger the temptation to give in to arrogance, greed, paranoia, “black-and-white” thinking, etc.. As with people, so with nations, since nations are led by people.
The truth is that, at the present moment, my government is a dangerous mixture of arrogance, paranoia, greed, and fear; when the greed and arrogance of power ( pre-9/11) is combined with fear and ignorance on a wide scale (post 9/11), you have optimal conditions for the rise of a Bush, in part because more people will let their “yin” (their fear, their pride, their hate) subjugate their “yang” -- their willingness to think complexly, their forbearance, their ability to listen to the truth, no matter how messy it may be. That is the state of affairs in American right now; people willingly -- sometimes proudly -- refuse to even consider evidence and opinions that throw their beliefs into question, because the countervailing tendency to confront the truth has been (only temporarily, I hope) overwhelmed. (A similar state of affairs has exited in France; think of the Dreyfus Affair, and the large numbers of people who willingly -- almost proudly -- ignored the truth.)
My point is that, given human nature and the right conditions, the madness of imperialism will happen anywhere and to any culture, just as madness of pride and greed can strike any human in the right circumstances. The best way to restore health is to look “with unblinking eyes” at what lies within -- and at what lies behind us, whoever and wherever we may be.
