what do i use with google earth

You have to setting option in Google earth (decimal degree and distance in kilometers)
Find your location and take note of Latitude and longitude.
I use this link to download the data.
http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/
setting input coordinates,decimal degree and ArcInfoASCII.Then download the srtm data and follow Brucepos manual.

i have setting option in Google earth decimal degree and distance in kilometers. i find a place how do i take note of Latitude and longitude. to get the green aroow so i can get started please help i even use a ruler but nothing happens

For to take note of Lat and Long you have to use Google Earth setting with decimal degree.
Moving with mouse you see data of Long and Lat (below the screen).
When you know Long and Lat you have to search the right tile (srtm...number) in Cgiar site and download the data.
It is not easy to explain all step,you perhaps need some attempts.
Then follow Brucepos manual.
Anyway is very easy make mistake.
Many steps with complex calculations .You have to organize with a spreadsheet with formulas.

Data not how Geotiff , but with format in ArcinfoAscii

You told me that

lat where you are interested is 47.59...  you must input how min 47 and how max 48
long                                                9.38..     you must input how min 9 and how max 10
then the site find the right tile (srtm...38_3),very simple

Cgiar site is little slow , some patience.
At the end download and save the data where you want on your PC.

To avoid misunderstandings.

Steps
1)Select the zone maps with Google Earth 15 km x 11.25 km.(use option with google earth ,decimal degree and kilometers)
When you draw the line be caution at degree (90°,or 0°,or 180°)
2)Take note of lat and long of top left point and lat and long of bottom right point.
3)With Cgiar site insert data min and max of lat and long of this two point,always in decimal degree.
4)Download data.
if with CGIar site are need 2 tiles to download , it is better to stop to continue,it is too much difficult work with two tiles.
Then follow Brucepos manual
