Tower on redoubts.

Anybody know for what this towers on redoubts?

Some people on Russian military history forum ask me about that.

I think the "towers" were light structures used as lookout to watch a long range of landscape....Also they may be used when firing to see over the smoke ?
The representations show only few and on well built fortifications, not hasty fieldworks !
More elaborate, higher wooden frame towers are seen in ACW pictures, both for watch and signals (wig-wag)...
