A less aggressive cavalry: how?
« le: 17 avril 2010, 15:49:28 pm »
Hi there,

I am doing quite well lately in some smaller battles (50 CEH); but I do still have a problem with over-agressive Ney-like cavalry units that
a) charge into squares, which they never win
b) charge after routed enemy cavalry, which lead my boys straight to the enemy lines, which gets my cavalry routed or even imprisoned.

Is there a way to prevent this, other than detaching them and trying to keep them in check?
Lord Uxbridge: As I am second in command and in case anything should happen to you, what are your plans?
Duke of Wellington: To beat the French.

Yes, go to the Doctrine editor and create a new Doctrine for your Army.  In the editor you can change the way your Cavalry or any other type of unit behaves.

With the OoB editor, set all units to low initiative. In this condition, the units don't attack...

Is there a middle way?
Of course I'd like my cavalry to pursue routed infantry, because my boys can imprison them.
Going after enemy cavalry, however, is something I don't necessarily want them to do - as explained earlier, they usually chase them all the way back to enemy lines where the roles are reversed. I have seen many of my horses being led off the field as a prisoner.

By now, I can't work on these issues or this kind of behavior... maybe the solution will be to add some new items in the doctrine.. no problem.

With low initiative, the unit can continue to receive the orders from the hierarchy, but they don't take any initiative themselves... so it's possible you keep a best control on your units..

JMM, thanks!
No worries if you can't work on these issues - I don't consider them "issues" at all :) Just trying to know what the options are.

What about the "middle" rating, not high and not low ?.

Low : the unit doesn't take any initiative..
Middle : the unit may take some initiative
High : the unit often takes the initiative to attack...

I know it's a bit "fuzzy".. but it's a few like in the real life  ;)

JMM, this is a very good feature...the only possible problem I can see is the amount of work required in the OOB editor to change these to how you want them, but it's a good feature which different people can set to their own preferred style - if they want to.....I like middle best, kind of a bit safer than high, without being to safe !.

My mistake.. because I didn't spend a few of time to propose an icon in order to set all units of a corps at the same level... (no really difficult)
That said, the initial idea is to put all units of a corps at the same level...
for example, it seems interesting to build a small with unit at high initiative... and send this corps to attack the other side in order to disturb the C-In-C... (light infantry, light cavalry, horse artillery)

Excellent idea!
It will be a great feature if we can change a corps/division/brigade initiative during the game, It will bring a great strategical deep.
JMM has my vote!  ;)

What a fantastic idea.  I make my OOBs with the random creation, then change them around a bit to suit the map, but to be able to make different Corps have a different initiative would be very good - and even better if that could be changed during the battle.

Would you be able to do this for one of the next updates ?.

Darsh...
My initial idea was in the OoB editor... because it's the Chief character and it can't change like that...
But why not in the game too   So, we have to think about that...

Gunner...
I have to see the code... In one of view, there is the icon showing all units initiative... Maybe it's easy...
No promise, but I'll take a look...

Of course the change of iniative during the game must have a delay like an order to make the choice a little more interesting for the results of the battle!
