Surrenders

these seem a bit odd

i had a light cavalry regiment scouting on my far left surrender to the enemy, i haven't read much of fast light cavalry scouts getting depressed and having to surrender because there's too many enemy infantry marching towards them.

it shouldnt be like they're looking into the palantir

isn't it their job to check this stuff out and come back and report

also i had a rgt cuirassiers surrender, i didnt see wot happened but when i did there were no enemy around and the surrendering cuirassiers were quietly filing towards the enemy passing closely by 2 friendly, high-morale grenadier squares.

the cuirassiers seem to have to elbow their way through the grenadiers to get to the enemy to surrender.

Units never surrender, they are always captured by another unit.  This happens when a routing unit is attacked in melee.

A unit of prisoners will be freed if it is in an area with a friendly unit with no enemy units nearby.  The freed unit will then leave the field, as it has had it's weapons removed.

Basically, your cavalry scouts lost a battle with another cavalry unit and were then attacked again while they were still routing.  The cuirassiers went through the same thing, but the fact the grenadiers were in square indicated the presence of an enemy cavalry unit nearby so they were not freed.

I played Montebello once and had a friendly infantry unit near the enemy LOP.  Every time a friendly prisoner unit passed by on the way off the map, they were freed, as there were no enemy units anywhere close.  It was interesting to watch.

I've seen this many times, it's a good feature.  It's been mentioned before that Cav appear to be too easy to "capture"  sometimes, has this been confirmed to be correct, or is some correction to this on the way in this or later patchs ?.

From what I've seen if a captured unit is taken off the map as "prisoners" that number is moved from prisoners to the killed and missing stat - is that right ?

If a captured unit leaves the field as prisoners, it's logged in the prisoner stat.  If they're freed, they're counted as left the battlefield.

Killed and missing include all the dead soldiers and the soldiers who have helped wounded off the field.

I'm not sure this is right, I have seen many many times where, for example, I have 1000 enemy prisoners and they are taken off the map rear on my side as prisoners, the stat then goes to zero, and the enemy killed and captured figure goes up by 1000.

Yes, and perhaps those lost as prisoners as well.

There are many battles where a load of guys have been taken as prisoner, and have been seen to be taken off the map as prisoners, but the prisoner stat is zero - I have seen it many times.

Is there another explanations to what's going on if we are both wrong ?.

It is possible for a unit to surrender if it is routing but has no safe place to go.  If there are enemy units around it, it may surrender without being meleed.

I set up a quick UNbalanced game to try a map out and had a huge mass surrender of the French Infantry attacking a defensive line when they were counter attacked by a Cavalry Corps in the exposed left flank.........many Regiments surrendered (some without melee) and I do believe it looked very realistic.
