JMM, I am still having this problem running under Windows 7 as well. I just checked my SpyBoard.txt file and it hasn't been modified since 30/12/09 even though I just ran the game today (04/01/10). Here are its properties:
Created: 30 December 2009, 17:33:47
Modified: 30 December 2009, 17:37:10
Accessed: 30 December 2009, 17:33:47
I therefore think you need to be careful about reading anything into the SpyBoard.txt file people send you without checking it has actually been written to.
I think the file security system used in Windows 7 must be the reason for the problem but I can't pin down what needs to be changed.
To clarify, my game runs fine when the "Hussar" splash-screen appears but fails with the "Client has stopped working" message when the other splash-screen appears.

OK JMM, I found where my SpyBoard.txt file was being written to. It's in C:\Users\<myname>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\HistWar\HistWar La Demo\Tracking.
