Burdened with plunder from Moscow, Napoleon's troops are headed back toward France. After the battle at Malo-Jaroslavets on 24 October, the Grande Arme finds itself retreating across the Borodino battlefield, the terrain there still littered with the grisly reminders of September's encounter. Historically, the French were not molested in this area by the cossacks shadowing them. But what if the cossacks had struck at them?
