PBEM issues and alternative scheme
« le: 20 juillet 2010, 22:29:09 pm »
The phase sequence of the PBEM mode is quite annoying, which makes me start to prefer the alternative method based on the .sav files.
Probably there is a good reason to have the extra calculation step per turn, but I just don't get it... Maybe I don't understand anything at all about the PBEM sequence...

As far as I understand, the objective is to allow both players give orders in one turn and to alternate the first to give orders. So, why not the following scheme:

1. Blue deploys and gives orders for Turn 1.
2. Red deploys and gives orders for Turn 1. Turn 1 is calculated and displayed. Red gives orders for Turn 2.
3. Blue replays Turn 1. Blue gives orders for Turn 2. Turn 2 is calculated and displayed. Blue gives orders for Turn 3.
4. Red replays Turn 2. Red gives orders for Turn 3. Turn 3 is calculated and displayed. Red gives orders for Turn 4.
5. etc.

In this way, each time a user receives the file, it is able to watch one turn of fighting. Overall, the game becomes more efficient.

By the way, the side that deploys first should be selectable.

Hello,

Citer
2. Red deploys and gives orders for Turn 1. Turn 1 is calculated and displayed. Red gives orders for Turn 2.

However...
Red watches the Turn1.. no good! He can restart his turn... not the best!

That said, very quickly, I'll add a new feature to save the email address of 2 players;
Thus, the file xxx.pbe (zipped)  will be automatically sent to your opponent.

What do you think about that?

Would this "know" what e-mail system you are using and would it keep a copy of the e-mail and file sent ?.  What about writing a message with the e-mail ?, we often discuss the latest developements in the game - how would that work if it was automated ?.

I find this PBEM system very easy and quick to use as it is, if it were up to me I'd leave it, unless changing it made it a lot better.

Ok! Now I understand. You know, since I never cheat, I didn't realize that others could.  :D

In that case I prefer the PBEM sequence as it is now. In fact there are some situations when one wishes or has to use a different email address - in fact it has already happened to me.

Regards,
António

This feature will be not automatic... it'll run if you enter the address of other gamer  ;)
Without address, the present system will be used  8)

Is it possible to know if there are many PBEM games running today?

I totaly agree , for me is not so important.
Now how it is is good for write 2 words of comment,a emoticon etc.
Also is also possible that arise other problems (if file not sent for some problem,or opponent not receive it ) ...etc. is it possible reload the game and resend it?
With email is always available a copy. There is also the question to rename file 1,2,3 for clarity of turn done.

Hi JMM,  you might remember that a link from game to email has been a dream of mine.  I LOVE the idea.  One of the most useful devices with Combat Mission was the PBEM Helper program that listed if I was waiting for a file or had one 'in hand' to play or had to send a finished file.  At one stage I was up to 9 PBEMs and it was so very useful!!
