The phase sequence of the PBEM mode is quite annoying, which makes me start to prefer the alternative method based on the .sav files.
Probably there is a good reason to have the extra calculation step per turn, but I just don't get it... Maybe I don't understand anything at all about the PBEM sequence...
As far as I understand, the objective is to allow both players give orders in one turn and to alternate the first to give orders. So, why not the following scheme:
1. Blue deploys and gives orders for Turn 1.
2. Red deploys and gives orders for Turn 1. Turn 1 is calculated and displayed. Red gives orders for Turn 2.
3. Blue replays Turn 1. Blue gives orders for Turn 2. Turn 2 is calculated and displayed. Blue gives orders for Turn 3.
4. Red replays Turn 2. Red gives orders for Turn 3. Turn 3 is calculated and displayed. Red gives orders for Turn 4.
5. etc.
In this way, each time a user receives the file, it is able to watch one turn of fighting. Overall, the game becomes more efficient.
By the way, the side that deploys first should be selectable.
